BIO

Ben Barrett is an independent consultant in the regulations of dangerous goods (hazardous materials). Mr. Barrett is President of DG Advisor, a consultancy dedicated to participation in the development and modification of international dangerous goods regulations on behalf of industry.

Mr. Barrett worked in the sporting arms & ammunition industry for 18 years as a specialist in gun powder manufacturing and logistics. In 2006 he formed the company DG Advisor to consult on Dangerous Goods shipments and storage, as well as manufacturing, distribution and use. His background includes experience with the regulations of the United Nations (UN), International Maritime Organization (IMO), the European Community (CE), the US Department of Transportation (DOT), the US Department of State (import/export/brokering), the US Department of Commerce (import/export), the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US fire service and various state and local governments.

As well as participation in the development of regulations, Mr. Barrett helps clients in compliance. He conducts training, has directed two training videos on propellants for shipping and first responders, and is an expert witness. He provides a turnkey service for obtaining transportation approvals and permits.

Mr. Barrett is active in the meetings of the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling (GHS) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He is a participant in the International Group of Experts on the Explosion Risks of Unstable Substances (IGUS) which among other things vettes UN proposals on explosives. Mr. Barrett sits on the Technical Committee on Explosives for the National Fire Protection Association, which issues the NFPA 495 Explosives Materials Code.

Mr. Barrett is a consultant to the Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI), which is dedicated to the safe and efficient shipment of sporting ammunition and components worldwide. He represents SAAMI at the UN and other venues, and consults for various clients.
